While I'm quite sure that you had other inspiration for this piece, I can't help but think of the Oso community north of Seattle Washington that has recently had a mudslide (hell, half a small mountain basically fell off and wiped out a portion of the community) which is just a ways north of where I live. The wasteland in the background, the broken lumber in the foreground...the sheer devastation of it all. And the one light a midst it. The beacon of hope for those that remain. The calm in the eye of the storm.
This is a very powerful image you've crafted. So much so that I can't even properly put it into words. Amazing...moving... those words don't even do this justice. And the quote that you placed above. That is just beautiful and so perfect for this image. Masterfully done!!
