The King in Yellow by Grivetart The King in Yellow by Grivetart
"Along the shore the cloud waves break,
The twin suns sink behind the lake,
The shadows lengthen
In Carcosa.

Strange is the night where black stars rise,
And strange moons circle through the skies,
But stranger still is
Lost Carcosa.

Songs that the Hyades shall sing,
Where flap the tatters of the King,
Must die unheard in
Dim Carcosa.

Song of my soul, my voice is dead,
Die thou, unsung, as tears unshed
Shall dry and die in
Lost Carcosa."

The King in Yellow -- Robert W. Chambers

Well isn't that just bloody awesome. Capturing himself in his 'natural element', pre-Chaosium.

Excellent work.

I really love this depiction of the King.  Honestly, i'm so tired of these tentacled, Derlethian Kings in Yellow. :p

I can see this rendition takes a lot of inspiration from True Detective.  Say what you will about the portrayal of the King in Yellow mythos therein, but it has done a lot to re-establish the King in Yellow as its own mythology. :)

I'm not even a die-hard purist: i don't mind the interactions between the Carcosa and Cthulhu mythoi.  But they needed to respect each other's boundaries.  The King in Yellow shouldn't be a Great Old One (let alone Cthulhu's half-sibling) any more than Cthulhu should turn out to be a phantom being of Carcosa.  Can the Great Old Ones know of the King in Yellow?  Sure.  Can readers of the King in Yellow also have read the Necronomicon?  Why not?  But they are entirely different beings and forces at work, and each needs to be defined by its own canon.  Neither should be a "satellite" mythos of the other; neither mythos should subsume the other.  Rather they should be co-existing, parallel mythologies.

One interesting thing about True Detective's version of the King in Yellow is that it takes cues from Amrose Bierce's description of Hastur as an ancient protector god of shepards.  (By the way, in the story 'Demoiselle d'Ys' in 'The King in Yellow', Hastur also appears to be a benign protector.)  While the god-like being at work in True Detective is not benign, it nonetheless seems connected to nature with the connections to antlers and and trees, which is also related to ancient Celtic deities.

Personally i do not believe Hastur and the King in Yellow to be the same being even if they are both in the play, or they are both at least partially antagonistic aspects of a greater force at work, or unrelated enemies.  In fact, i think the word Hastur is being used to refer to many different things.  Fore example, if He Who Is Not To Be Named (who i think is the Nameless Mists and the Magnum Innominandum) is called Hastur, it is not because that is his name but because no one is supposed to say or know his real name and so sorcerers and others substitute the name 'Hastur' due to historical association.  This does not mean that he is connected to the shepard god Hastur or to the possible locale of Hastur in the Carcosa Mythos (which may or may not be named for the shepard god).

All of this is a long way of saying i really appreciate this art, and hope True Detective inspires many new acolytes to Hastur and/or the King in Yellow. ;)

Très très beau :)

Tu utilises un petit truc pour ces effets de déformation et tension sur le "drap" du personnage, ou tout fait main ?

The soft layers of orange from the sun that you did was magnificent!

Personlly I'm not really a fan of "gentle, round edges", so I also loved how your lines and details appeared sharp and slender.

I dig it 100%. :)
